I ATTENDED the presentation by Network Rail in Wootton Bassett on Wednesday, May 20, which outlined the road closures and the work due to be initiated on the Skew Bridges and the Marlborough Road Bridge to allow for the electrification process to be carried out.

There was great interest as to where the temporary road route was determined to start and end.

I was interested, as my Advanced Driving Tuition means that I need to plan routes relative to the objective of my lesson plan.

On that basis, the closure of Dauntsey Bridge a few months ago caused me to make many changes of desired routes.

This work obviously has to be carried out, but I posed the question: 'The temporary road will cost a great deal of money, so what happens to the it after all of the work is completed?' No one seemed to know.

I cannot imagine that the temporary road will be left to become overgrown with greenery after the cost that it will have incurred.

I understand that the land for the road belongs to Oxford University and not various land owners, unless I have been misinformed.

I feel that the temporary road may become permanent due to the possibility of future development which will make the cost of the temporary road an effective financial objective.

Temporary road? I don’t think so. Not in my book.

Unless I am really mistaken I feel that there is no way that road will be a temporary measure.

I may, of course, be wrong. Perhaps it is because of my cynical nature, as I never trust anyone until they have earned my trust.
