EVERYONE who took part in the Starlight Walk for Prospect Hospice is a hero.

The same goes for everybody who helped a participant, inspired them or handed over some money for what is surely among the greatest of all local good causes.

Many of those who took part in the walk did so in tribute to a loved one who experienced or still experiences the care and compassion which are offered by the hospice 24 hours a day, every day.

Other participants have no direct or indirect connection to the hospice, but recognise the value of its work and the perpetual need to ensure that work is safeguarded.

Prospect has brought comfort to countless thousands of people facing circumstances which might otherwise have been terrifying and unbearably lonely.

The hospice helps not just people facing life-limiting medical conditions but also those closest to them. It recognises that loved ones have needs of their own and should be given as much respect and comfort as patients.

As we have pointed out many times before, the cost of providing this excellent standard of care is very high indeed – although worth every penny. The bulk of that money must come from voluntary donations, whether directly or through events such as the Starlight Walk.

Anybody who gives so much as a penny to the hospice can feel secure in the knowledge that they have helped fellow human beings at a time of great need.

Let us all do all we can.
