MP Robert Buckland makes some interesting points in his column of July 15 – three in particular caught my attention.

Robert congratulates the PM for pledging to spend two per cent on defence.

However, he knows this has been achieved by clever use of other departmental budgets to meet the target figure.

Secondly, he offers his support for the introduction of a new radiotherapy centre in Swindon. He joins many thousands who will welcome the unit’s introduction.

What mystifies many of us is why the new radiotherapy unit is not being fully funded by the NHS.

I hope Robert will not insult the intelligence of your readers by suggesting the unit is unaffordable through the NHS.

After all, the government of which he is a member finds billions to spend on foreign aid, international summits and vanity projects such as HS2.

It is simply wrong that £1.9m of the funding for the radiotherapy centre should be sourced from charitable donations.
