I WAS confused by the letter from Ms Jenny Crawford, Christie Close, July 18. She may be correct when she accuses Swindon Borough Council of not completing certain works but I fail to see what that has to do with her getting a parking ticket.

Ms Crawford said she took her daughter to the Old Town Bowl to perform with others from her dance school. She parked in Quarry Road and on returning to her vehicle had received a parking ticket. Seven others from her dance school and members from other dance groups also received parking tickets. Based on the information given, I assume the vehicles were parked in a residential area and had exceeded the waiting time limit.

Assuming there are traffic management signs and markings on Quarry Road which give clear instructions about parking restrictions, then Ms Crawford has no reason to complain. If anyone disagrees with their fine they have the right to appeal and after appeal rejection are entitled to use a free independent arbitration service.

If these people were contravening traffic management regulations I see no reason why they should be exempt from receiving parking tickets. They were there to attend an event, not some lifesaving mission in an ambulance or fire engine.

There are several car parks in Old Town which are within a short walking distance of Town Gardens. The problem seems to be that many people expect to use their cars as a door to door facility. As an alternative, there are public transport links to Old Town.

It seems unlikely civil enforcement officers were unreasonable. This should be seen as a method of encouraging motorists to show consideration for others. I hope the people who got parking tickets will learn from their mistakes.
