I AM not quite sure why my anecdotal evidence is considered less relevant than that of J Adams since a large proportion of his letter consists of just that.
My evidence is also based on personal experience.
The Rise And Fall Of The Working Class is indeed an important and informative book but its content does not take away from the fact that grammar schools, post war, allowed a level of social mobility to some working-class children which did not previously exist.
Jeffrey quotes just one source for some of his ‘research’.
I should be interested to hear of any more, although I suspect that will not be forthcoming.
