DOES anyone else remember the slogan ‘let the train take the strain’? I think that goes back to the 1970s with British Rail advertising the benefits of train travel.

Times have changed and it’s the roads taking the strain as the railway industry tries to get its act together.

With the bridge at Stratton Green closing to allow for electrification of the main line to London, the roads around Swindon are becoming clogged as this main route into and out of the town is closed.

And now we hear that there will be no trains into and out of Swindon on November 21 and 22, a busy weekend in the build up to Christmas because of signalling work.

I just hope when all this railway work is completed we have the best rail system in Europe, with all the time and money that has gone into it.

Otherwise, forget taking the train and use the road instead. Or perhaps it will be worth not going anywhere and just staying at home.
