Emissions of concern

THE meeting about the new energy centre, which took place on Sunday at Grange Drive Community Centre was reasonably well supported.

However, there was too much time taken up with trivialities and pointless questions.

The objective of the meeting surely was to let the developer meet the people who feel they will be affected by this potentially dangerous project.

And to show that they are not about to lie down and just let it happen.

The developer should learn from the history of this section of Swindon, that we do not take kindly to having things forced upon us.

The most recent that springs to mind was the amount of outrage and dislike of Honda's projected windmills at South Marston.

This was, as most are aware, strongly protested about at council meetings, to the effect that the meeting was eventually held in the Wyvern Theatre.

Those who attended left the council in no doubt of their feeling about the matter under discussion.

The majority are, I believe, concerned about the emissions from this proposed plant.

They want to know what is coming out of a 100ft chimney.

Additionally, there is the road and traffic pollution caused by the number of lorries going to and from the plant each day, causing disruption for all traffic in this part of the town.

It’s not going to go away, so we need to keep a wary eye on this potentially dubious project.

Collection points

OVER recent years when walking through Swindon town centre I have been regularly been stopped by a person (usually male) wearing military garb who is collecting for one of the numerous military charities that has been set up since Bush and Blair’s folly in Iraq.

On Saturday afternoon I was walking through the Brunel Plaza when I was once again stopped by a man in uniform asking if I would be willing to donate to the 1st Knight Military Charity which he was working/collecting for.

As a pacifist I abhor such charities asking me for a donation.

If these charities want to set up stall and collect money they should use one of the many empty shop premises that are available in Swindon centre.

There, those who want to donate can go in and do so, thereby allowing those like me to walk into town without the annoyance of being harassed by those working on behalf of these military charities.

Chance of a lifetime

EVER since the end of the Second World War, when we made decisions that changed the lives of our citizens, I never thought a decision of such magnitude would have to be made again.

The decision regarding the EU referendum is on par with the Second World War one.

Its outcome will affect the lives of generations to come for many, many years.

Ignore the cries of the money-obsessed multitudes. Human values far outweigh the material things in life. People all over the world will still trade with us. Getting back our borders, laws, justices, scrapping the Human Rights fiasco etc.

But most of all having to answer to no one except the English-speaking people of this nation, and self-respect for the memory of those over the centuries who died for the privilege.

We are not Europeans and never will be Europeans.

A tunnel, euros etc. never made a difference to your blood heritage. Be tourists but never any more.

If you still love this isle and all it stands for come June vote out. It will never come a second time.

Show of great talent

I WOULD like to publicly congratulate all the young people and those responsible for putting on such a fine show in Annie at the Wyvern over the weekend.

It was a brilliant show put on by the young people of all ages that caught the imagination in a very professional way.

Some of those playing main parts would not have looked out of place in the West End.

Well done for such hard work in making this such a success.

Settling old scores

THERE appears to be a contributor to the letters pages, who shall remain unnamed, but who cannot send a communication to the letters pages without naming myself and others.

Regardless of our political differences I am always mentioned with vitriol, abuse and insults.

Forty years ago, where I came from in Glasgow, there would be a knock on the abusers’ door at 8am on a Sunday by the receiver of such personal insults.

This would be followed by a demand to settle their arguments over the spare ground near the obsolete bomb shelters.

And there the parties in dispute would settle their differences in the age-old manner.

Sometimes Queensbury rules were put aside and there was usually a large audience watching, if my memory serves me correctly.

Thankfully, we have all moved on from that scenario.

However, let me make a serious point after I stop laughing at his personal diatribe of abuse: May I and all my family, offer our sympathy regarding his problem.
