EU must be joking!

YET another letter from Mr Spry.

The last letter he wrote, as usual, had a dig at Mrs Thatcher and how she closed the railworks, but no mention of how Labour shut down every operation in the works.

In this letter he says she sold off the silver, and again makes no mention of the gold that Mr Brown sold off at rock bottom prices.

Can he say what the prices were and what they are now?

I think the figures are 285p/£1.600 an ounce, but he can say.

As for the EU, I wonder if he read the article about the chap in Royal Wootton Bassett who has to wait for five weeks to get a doctor’s appointment.

The rate of EU migrants since 2009 has now been put at about 500 a day.

Can he say who is paying for all of this, and if this is such a tiny island, why do these people come to this place?

It’s because of the minimum wage perhaps. Current figures show unemployment stands at five per cent in the UK and 10.5 per cent in the EU.

Did he read that the EU announced it has doubled the number of EU judges it has? Who is paying for them? The cost of these judges is put at £23m a year.

As for changing from within, six out of 10 laws in this country are now made in the EU. Do we control those then?

Ask the fishermen of the UK that are left, what they think of EU laws.

We now cannot even deport criminals from this country, due to EU restrictions on where and how they are treated when they reach their homeland.

Remember the EU has even delayed the Bill that will stop the use of electric kettles and irons until after the vote on June 23, that’s the hypocrisy of that lot.

Mr Spry must have read the article from the PM saying that when we leave, planes would not be able to fly from this country to another EU country.

He didn’t say how they flew prior to 1975, but then when you go to these stories, anything goes to make your point.

Going back to his change from within, when you are one of 28, how does that work?

Little UK knowledge

TUESDAY’S Advertiser saw the return to print of HG Smith.

HG long ago reached the bottom, with his calls for genocide by a nuclear weapon attack on people far away, so he can’t descend further.

Instead, he returns to another of his favoured themes. HG has before demonstrated that, despite perpetual claims of pride in the history of the UK, he actually has little knowledge of it.

For instance, in his previous claim that the UK has 1,000 years of stable insularity from the rest of the world.

His letter on Tuesday talks about a “decision regarding the EU referendum” which is “on a par with the Second World War.”

How utterly absurd on every level. He talks about “human values” but doesn’t say what they are unless he means cowering behind fences.

He mentions people who died for “the privilege” but it is impossible to find what privilege he is talking about from his tortured prose.

And he shares his fantasy of a blood heritage. It is a mercy he managed to avoid clichés about sceptred isles and green and pleasant lands.

The trouble is, I want to vote to leave the EU as it is a neo-liberal bosses club, but the mainstream out campaign, the one the media gives space to, and which finds its echo in Adver letters, is so odious that I keep having to look again.

Going for a song?

I HAVE been thinking about leaving or staying in the EU.

If we leave the EU does that mean we will not be able to enter the Eurovision Song Contest anymore?

Serious thought needs to be given to this as, if we do leave, we may never get another opportunity.

It may not matter and we may still be allowed to enter, but I am sure it will affect the voting and we won’t be so popular.

There may be many who will disagree with me but it is only my view.

Crematorium query

I MET an old Irish drinking mate of mine whom I hadn’t seen for 20 years and he informed me his mother-in-law had passed away. Forget the mother-in-law jokes, he was visibly upset.

I had a great relationship with my late mother-in-law. When the wife got ready to pack her bags over any of my youthful misdemeanours she would say, ‘he is an awful lad’, and saved my bacon on more than one occasion.

My old friend informed me the family had a few weeks to wait for the cremation to take place.

When we lose our loved ones most of us would like to see them laid to rest as soon as possible.

To my mind a wait like this would prolong the grieving process.

My point is, with an increasing population and a large housing project on the cards for East Swindon, could any of our local borough councillors let us know if there are any plans regarding expansion at Kingsdown crematorium?

Or are there any plans for building another crematorium to cope with the increasing demand that a larger population will sadly require?

If there is, it won’t be done overnight given the planning permission and the building process that will be needed.

End of the steel age

IRON has been produced in Britain for nearly 3,000 years and Britain now makes some of the finest steel in the world.

Unfortunately after 3,000 years of continuous production it now looks likely that it will all come to an end in the next few weeks.

TATA Steel has come to the conclusion it is not profitable to make steel in Britain any more.
