Perception of art

I HAVE no idea whether Danny Rowland’s poetry is even worth the expenditure on chalk. (EA 7th June) However:

1. I have never heard anyone in Regent Street complain about what he does;

2. It adds a small modicum of colour and interest to a Regent Street increasingly grey and devoid of shops (farewell BHS);

3.When it rains, the whole thing disappears.

This is quite unlike the graffiti and tags all around the town centre, Old Town, Broad Green and even all around the (rather effective) new roundabout layout at Bruce Street bridges.

The council seems disinterested or unable to do anything about this but does appear to have resources to persecute Danny Rowland, with seemingly a much different approach than Bath and Cardiff.

It’s odd they want to spend £22m on a home for the arts, then dismiss the art, thought and effort here, as more offensive than spray painted tags everywhere.

Wrong weather?

GOSH, it came as a huge surprise to me, and I must thank the Swindon Borough Council spokesman for informing us all, that it is in fact the weather that is to blame for our town looking so overgrown and jungle-like.

Yes, it’s official we’ve had a wet spell coupled with warm temperatures ...doh...it’s England and it’s been like that forever.

Is the spokesman aware that the climate affects our own lawns as well?

My lawn does not resemble their verges, also when the grass was cut more often it was, wait for it, shorter and looked pleasant.

Make obvious statements by all means but don’t cover up the reality of reduced services by telling us that it’s the weather.

Watch out for our council reassuring us that it’s probably the sun that makes it “light” and there’s an outside chance that if you’re not careful the “rain” may just make you wet.

WE WOULD like support Val Hemens on her letter of June 4 and to express our disgust at the car parking situation when visiting the Wyvern. We too have a disabled badge and park in one of the few spaces opposite the theatre.

We have to arrive very early, so we usually have a meal beforehand, which makes it an expensive evening. The Arts Centre seats are so uncomfortable we cannot go there.

In fact, parking is bad for disabled people all over the town. We cannot shop in the town now as we cannot walk so far from the car parks and it is not always convenient to go to Shopmobility.

We also heartily agree with Val when she says that no-one will flock to a new museum Re the EU, doesn’t anyone realise that, regardless of the referendum outcome, it has been fixed that we stay in. What we need is a revolution, but as we are in our 70s we are too old to do anything about that.
