EU result still sinking in

THE enormity of last week’s vote is still sinking in. The political chaos is well under way, as is the economic uncertainty.

What is clear is that the UK will now be leaving the EU and we must quickly come together to shape our future.

I have never liked the institution of the EU with its federal agenda, the Euro and its democratic deficit. Nevertheless, I voted to remain because I was convinced Brexit would come at a very high price, both economically and politically.

I fear we will be very isolated in Europe and our decision will cause problems in the EU for which we will not be forgiven easily.

Does it matter? To me it does. I feel British and European. I like the idea of nations working in friendship and common cause.

When our way of life is under attack from extremists and Putin is becoming menacing, we should be standing shoulder to shoulder in defiance.

I fear the distraction of internal and EU politics will distract us from effectively protecting our security.

I understand the unease people feel about immigration and how those most affected have not been heard.

Control of our borders is important and troubled me in voting to remain. Immigration will continue but hopefully with more control. Free movement cannot continue.

We must not turn intolerant to immigrants already here. The majority make a vital contribution to our country and need to be welcomed.

Only time will tell whether the decision to leave is a good one for our country. I do hope so. My fear is that we may be more isolated, more inward-looking and more intolerant to outsiders.

Finally, I regret the loss of David Cameron as Prime Minister. His replacement needs to be someone who can unite the country, has a level head and is diplomatic and not someone who changes their beliefs when a political opportunity reveals itself. On that basis, I do not consider Boris to be qualified for the job.

Praise for immigrants

MY TWO-YEAR-OLD grandson fell and injured his head. He was taken to the Great Western hospital where a Polish doctor and a South African nurse patched him up.

I would like to say a big thank you to these professional people.

Without their care the NHS and the UK would be much the poorer.

It is high time we started praising immigrants and not demonising them.

Wild allegations made

YOUR correspondent Jeremy Kemble states with certainty that the referendum debate was taken over by “wild allegations about immigration” (SA 28 June).

I wonder would that be similar to the ‘wild allegation’ he makes when declaring that the UK will ship “all the east Europeans back to their own countries”?
