I leave litter now

IT WAS very interesting to read the letter from Bill Williams, (Swindon Advertiser, Thursday, 20 April), regarding individuals’ choice to pick up litter in their own areas, as I understand it.

Well done Bill! I was one of those people who did this in my village for a long time. I even used the ‘letters page’ to joke about it, as I wondered how the people who drank the ‘high energy drinks’ couldn’t find the ‘energy’ to deposit their cans in the litter bin that was close by and just threw then on the floor.

I now ignore the litter as I am of the same opinion as Bill Williams. Why should we do the job when we are faced with, as Bill says, an increase in council tax that wipes out our pension increase immediately so that as years go by we become worse off!

I have a pride in my village as I do tend the War Memorial every other week, along with four other dedicated guys, to make it a presentable memory of those we have lost. If we didn’t do it, who would?

That area, fortunately, does not seem to attract much litter. However, I have ceased tidying up after the morons who deposit their Saturday takeaway on our village streets and paths.

The village does have litter picking days etc, attended by volunteers who clean up after the morons who have received not one iota of parental guidance over the years that they have taken breath. Their homes must be a sight for sore eyes.

Yes Bill, I have pretty much given up on that issue and now leave litter where it has been dropped, so you have my agreement. Enough is enough.

Just include me out

HERE we go again, we all sigh. I refer to the snap General Election on June 8.

I have never missed a vote in my lifetime as too many people fought and died to give me that privilege, including members of my family and my wife’s.

My late father-in-law, an Aberdonian, survived in the Royal Army Medical Corps, but lost three of his brothers.

Like most people I imagine, I have already made my mind up where my vote is going. Which party in my opinion will need the political power to act in the best interests of my country and my fellow citizens.

On that basis I intend to use my remote control and change channels at the slightest hint of a politician’s appearance.

This also applies to any of my contributions to these pages. None of my efforts will contain any political content until after June 8.

I think most readers will share Brenda from Bristol’s opinion on that one, when asked her opinion on live TV about another election she said: “Not another one.”

Contributors to these pages may have a different outlook on the issue. With apologies to movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn my reply is: “Ladies and gentlemen, you may include me out.”
