With Town comfortably beating Notts County 3-0 and Bristol City drawing 0-0 with just a few minutes left, it looked like Mark Cooper’s side would be taking top spot in League One for the first time this season.

But our local rivals down the M4 scored their winning goal in the 87th minute to keep Town in 2nd place for at least another week.

Of course fans want to see Town sit at the top of the table, but Bristol City’s result may well turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Despite many pundits and fans agreeing it’s pointless to look at the league table until around February time, more pressure is always heaped onto the side at the summit of the league.

Swindon’s tag by pundits and fans as the underdogs, and being the side that doesn’t belong at the top is something that has worked this season, and it would be slightly worrying to see those perceptions change across the league.

Being at the top is something this squad, and the majority of Town’s players have never experienced, but if Town did achieve top spot at some point, I’m confident the players and management would be able to handle that pressure.

Players contracts has dominated the local sport news this week with Raphael Rossi Branco still to commit his future to Town, and Ben Gladwin agreeing an extension on his current deal.

It’s great news that Gladwin has extended his deal after some superb displays so far this season.

With Town’s strongest area on the pitch in midfield with Luongo, Kasim and Louis Thompson, it was always going to be hard to push one of those players out the team, so Ben has found himself a new position.

It was in this new role that the former Reading trainee shone last weekend as he set-up Town’s second goal of the afternoon.

He’s far away from being the finished article, but he has made a great start to life as a professional, let’s hope it continues.

Unfortunately the situation with our other former non-league player isn’t as straight forward, as different sides of the argument are played out in the media.

With Lee Power saying the Brazilian does not want to sign a new deal, to Branco himself being reportedly upset after being told that he would not play until he had renewed his deal at the club.

But despite the disagreement, the defender does want to extend his contract, hopefully this can be sorted soon with a busy Christmas period coming up next week, squad rotation will be key.

In many households’ including my own, Football and Christmas are intertwined.

Unfortunately Swindon has been dealt a bad hand once again with the fixtures, with Town not playing at home on Boxing Day for the 8th season in a row.

Town face Doncaster, Walsall, Port Vale and Fleetwood over the Christmas and New Year period, knowing that if they can maintain their impressive form, the club has a huge chance of starting 2015 at the top of League One.
