I don’t know about you, but that “game” at Wembley seems like a lifetime ago, such has been the pace of pre-season.

With all the comings and goings, the high profile friendlies and the frenzy surrounding a certain media strategy.

Firstly, lets talk about the news that’s been covered by the national press in the UK and even graced the pages of the New York Times.

The club has effectively told the local press they are no longer welcome at Swindon Town, and will only be allowed access to the club for the amount of time that’s under the Football League rules.

Football and the media have a love/hate relationship, but despite this, they can’t survive without each other, and that’s as true at Manchester Utd as it is at Swindon Town.

Swindon needs the local media to engage supporters with the club, and you do that with the Town’s main newspaper and other media outlets that reach out everyday and let’s them know what’s going on, and not with a smart phone app, which the majority of fans will not use.

If you don’t allow local journalists to do their jobs, you’re only ever going to damage the club in the long term.

A football clubs press officer has always controlled the news that comes out of a football club, every club in the country does the same thing, and that makes total sense, to portray yourselves the best you can.

But 95% of other football clubs in the UK also have an independent voice in the local press who are welcomed alongside that to balance it up, that seems like something Mr. Power is determined to rid from the club.

Unfortunately this news has dominated the clubs pre-season and overshadowed many great things that Lee Power has done over the summer.

The renewing of Anton Rodgers’ contract for a further two years seems to have been the best piece of business done over the summer, as Brendan Rodgers has sent a superb batch of players to the club over the summer.

And I don’t mean that in a facetious way, In Anton Rodgers we have a decent footballer, but if he had a different surname, he wouldn’t still be at Swindon Town.

Like everything else in life, football is all about who you know, and Lee Power has played that perfectly with many clubs, if you sign the Liverpool managers son, its going to improve relationships with Brendan Rodgers.

And in that newfound friendship with Liverpool, we have acquired three new talented faces that will be important this season.

Lawrence Vigouroux enjoyed a superb debut as his penalty save gave the players a much-needed kick up the jacksie to go on and turn the game around.

Kevin Stewart had a quiet first half on Saturday but after the break he burst into life and showed why Mark Cooper was desperate to sign the young midfielder. Jordan Williams was easily the most consistent player over pre-season as he makes playing the game look easy, and possesses a Football League managers dream, versatility.

Fabian Robert looks a good find on a free transfer, and I look forward to seeing how he progresses over the next 10 months, the re-signing of Jordan Turnbull was a stroke of genius by the chairman, a signing that could be season defining.

Nathan Byrne’s rise from a fullback who had trouble defending to one of the best attacking threats in League One continued over the weekend.

The image of him standing on the pitch with Preston fans celebrating behind him from May could have defined his time at Town, but he now has the chance of becoming a key player in helping Town go one better next May.
