A COUPLE of weeks after the world celebrated Back to the Future day, chairman Lee Power’s new appointment has Town fans looking back into a historic season in the club’s history, as a familiar face returns to take the top job at the County Ground.

If you mention the 1992/93 season to any Swindon fan of a certain age you will hear many tales of a team led by Glenn Hoddle that produced some of the greatest football ever seen at the club.

One of the key men from Hoddle’s successful side, Martin Ling, returns to Swindon 19 years after his departure as a player to become the club’s new manager.

Ling brings with him 10 years of managerial experience and a huge understanding of the football league, especially at this level after working as a scout at fellow League One side Walsall.

The former Leyton Orient boss wasn’t at the front of my mind when Mark Cooper left the club, but looking at the current remit the manager would have to work under, Town have hired the right man for the job.

When Martin left his last managerial position at Torquay United in 2013 his reasons for his departure were well publicised and since his return to the game he has never shied away from talking about the health issues he faced and defeated.

As a society we’re not very good at talking about or understanding mental health issues, it’s something that’s best ignored and kept out of conversation, but thankfully there are positive steps being made and removing the stigma surrounding depression and other mental health illnesses - and that’s thanks to people like Ling.

His attitude to his illness and everything surrounding it has been highly commendable, especially in an environment like professional football, where admitting something like depression can be seen as a sign of weakness.

In truth, it’s the complete opposite.

Town are also looking to bring in another coach, hopefully Ross Embleton becoming the new first team coach, moving Luke Williams into the role of assistant manager.

Bulking up the backroom staff at Town can only be a good thing moving forward, and something long overdue.

Another good piece of news this week has been the confirmation of Ben Gladwin extending his loan deal at the club.

Keeping a player of Ben’s quality is vital if we want to move away from the bottom half of the table.
