Welcome to the real world son!

My eldest son was after a pound today (he’s always after something, usually money or junk food) Anyway, I told him that he could earn his pound by taking his younger brother to his ballet class. He immediately asked for the pound before he had done the agreed job, to which I replied:

“No, you have to earn it first son. I can’t phone my boss and ask to be paid before I do my work. In fact, I have to wait a month to get paid.”

My son replied absolutely astounded

“A whole month, but that’s disgusting!”

I then went on to explain that is how all jobs are. You have to work usually a month in advance before you get paid. Poor Cal was appalled; he just couldn’t get his head around it. He went on:

“I’m not getting a rubbish job like that; I am going to get a job where you are paid every hour.”

He was under the illusion that jobs advertised with an hourly rate meant that you got paid your wages straight into your hands every single hour! I explained that this was not the case either to further disgust.

He then decided that this was all really bad news, but it was way too far in the future for him to worry about. He was going to get a Saturday job when he was15 and get paid straight away, as surely these rules only applied to proper grown up jobs. I haven’t told him the bad news yet… Well I have four years to break it to him eeek!

So when you pay him for the job you can deduct 25p tax and 10p national insurance, see what reaction you get.
