Dan the Fan: Di Canio starts to build

A couple of weeks into pre-season and as expected there have been more players on the way out than in so far.

Alan Sheehan, Scott Cuthbert, Vincent Pericard and Jakub Jesionkowski have all moved on so far.

Sheehan has decided to leave and join Notts County in League One, which isn’t a shock move as the left back was already looking for a way out of Wiltshire even before the end of the season.

Centre defender Scott Cuthbert has joined Leyton Orient which came as more of a shock and a disappointment. Last season, like nearly all the squad, Cuthbert didn’t have the best of times in defence but the season before showed all his qualities in abundance.

Having a brilliant and experienced defender like Gordon Greer obviously helped him, but he still showed he was a great player for the future and if its true the club didn’t even offer Cuthbert a new deal, that’s ridiculous.

But it’s a different story with Vincent Pericard and Jakub Jesionkowski.

Since joining in January 2010 Pericard has never showed on a consistent basis that he was good enough and has rightly been shown the door, but I’m sure he’ll find a new club for next season.

In more positive transfer news Paolo Di Canio has signed his first two players ready for this season. Joe Devera and Jon Smith have joined from Barnet and York respectively.

Devera joins the club after an impressive time with Barnet, even though they were in relegation trouble for nearly all of last season. Devera was one of the few shining lights of the season and has been in nearly all his time at Underhill by being player of the season two out of the past four seasons.

Jon Smith joins the club after an impressive season in the Blue Square Premier with York City.

A tough-tackling box to box midfielder according to York fans who saw him develop over the last season. Jon is also no stranger to the west county after a season at Forest Green Rovers in 2009/10.

Lets hope this gamble of bringing in a non-league player works out, as Town fans we’ve seen it work both ways with the brilliance of Charlie Austin to the disappointment of Lloyd Opara.

Today we saw the draw for the 1st Round of the Carling Cup, and unlike previous seasons, we’ve finally got an interesting game to look forward to in this competition.

Town will be taking on local rivals Bristol City at Ashton Gate. It will be a great chance for Paolo to become an instant fans favourite if we can go to Bristol and advance to the second round.

Of course around 5 years ago playing City wasn’t that uncommon when both teams were fighting it out in League One but since 2006 both teams have gone the opposite way in the football league. it would be nice to have a chance to go to Ashton Gate and earn the bragging rights once again in August.
