The book “My Body Belongs to Me” is a wonderful book that teaches children who and what to do if they are have been or is suffering from Sexual Abuse. It educates them in a way with rhyme and illustrations and encourages a child that it is okay to tell an adult when you have been touched in a private area, whether it is a teacher, parents, police officer or anyone who will listen. And keep telling until someone does believe you.

It is very hard to talk to your children about sexual abuse and what steps they should take. The book is targeted for ages 3 years old to 10 years old. Most children feel it is their fault when they are sexually abused and must be reassured over and over again to allow them to release this guilt.

Jill Starishevsky, the author of this book is a District Attorney in New York City whose job is a prosecutor for child abuse and sex crimes. Jill wrote this book after a little 9 year old girl saw an Oprah Winfrey show about children who were sexually abused. Oprah stated “tell an adult, until someone believes you”. So the little girl told her teacher. Jill Starishevsky prosecuted the uncle who had abused this little girl and is now serving a lengthy sentence.

My Body Belongs to Me is an excellent teaching aid and on the back page it offers suggestions of how to talk about sexual abuse and where to go for help.
