Dan the Fan: Only the Trophy? We Town supporters could not care less

Twenty months after tasting defeat at Wembley, Town earned the chance to return to the home of football in March after a fantastic night at the County Ground on Tuesday.

The game itself won’t live long in the memory but overall Town fully deserved the 1-0 win on the night thanks to another important goal from Alan Connell.

Once again Matt Richie and Paul Caddis pulled most of the strings when Town pushed forward with the ball but Alan McCormack and Joe Devera were again just as important at the back snuffing out any potential danger on the Town goal.

It’s amazing to think how far the club has moved forward in the last nine months under the guidance of the manager Paolo Di Canio.

His work ethic and man management skills has seemed to transform a club who were bankrupt of any confidence and leadership to a team challenging for promotion and who will play in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final for the first time.

We know that the JPT isn’t the most glamorous trophy you can win in English football but for the 48 teams that entered at the start of the season its their only real chance of a Cup Final at Wembley.

And I don’t think any of the fans or players of those other clubs would say no to a day out at Wembley and the potential of winning more silverware.

We all expected that when Paolo had any success the inevitable would happen and he’d be linked to any big job that becomes available.

So it was encouraging to hear him stamped out any talk of him moving to Leeds and wanting to build success at Swindon Town. Wise move.

This Saturday Town travels to the familiar surroundings of Underhill to take on JPT area finalists Barnet, who after a terrible start to the season went unbeaten in January in the league and now find themselves nine points away from the relegation zone.

Town will have Luke Rooney and Billy Bodin back after they were cup tied in midweek and hopefully they will go straight into the starting line up to give some other key players a rest.

After Town’s midweek cup heroics the players must still be full of confidence and should go to Barnet this Saturday and pick up another important three points, which will push us back into the top three of the League Two table.
