Dan the Fan: Town making all the headlines after Cup heroics

When watching football on TV you always see one team that upset the odds in the F.A Cup and make all the headlines the next day, but it never seemed to happen to Swindon Town, until Saturday.

I’ve seen plenty of memorable moments at Town, including lifting the League One title in 1996, Invincibile scoring to keep us up in 2001, achieving promotion in 2007 and most recently the 1st leg of the League One playoffs semi-final against Charlton.

Sundays 2-1 F.A Cup win over Wigan at a sell-out County Ground was a magnificent day all round and it will go down as another big moment in the clubs 132 year history.

Even though Wigan made nine first team changes from their last game they still had a team on the pitch that should of beaten a League Two team.

But Town throughout the 90 minutes were the better side and deserved to make the 4th Round draw.

Unfortunately with a cup competitions in the early rounds if you have a massive result it doesn’t mean you are guaranteed another mouth-watering tie as we all found out on Sunday Evening.

An away trip to either Leicester City or Nottingham Forest is our reward for Saturdays win.

Not the glamour tie we all wanted but with both teams struggling to make an impact in the Championship (especially Forest) it’s a big chance for us to progress into the 5th Round of the F.A Cup.

After the players heroics last Saturday we had another big cup game yesterday when the team visited Underhill to play Barnet in the JPT area final 1st leg.

After going ahead late in the first half from an Aden Flint header the home side leveled the game up in the second half which earned the home side a draw.

Considering the massive game the players had come off it wasn’t a bad result and I’m still confident we can win at the County Ground (7th February) in the 2nd leg to progress to another Wembley final.

With a big League Two game coming up this weekend Paolo rested a few key players, which gave Lander Gabilondo, Alessandro Cibocchi and Lukas Magera a chance to impress the boss.

Since arriving in Swindon Lander has done a good job when needed on the wing and has set up some key goals this season and overall has done well.

The same did go for Cibocchi but after his poor showing at Rovers he needs to put on some good performances to rebuild his young career at Town.

Lukas Magera has a strange situation at Town, he arrived at the club with International football experience to his name and a decent scoring record but so far he hasn’t impressed in Wiltshire.

The most frustrating thing with Lukas is you can tell he has some quality; during the Port Vale and Wigan games he showed his talent but he needs to start producing that level of consistently more often for Town if he wants to start more games and make an impact.

And if he does he could be a massive player for us in he next half of the season.

This Saturday the club travels north to Sheffield to take on Rotherham Utd at the Don Valley Stadium.

Before you think it, yes that sentence is correct. The Millers are playing at the Don Valley while their new stadium ‘New York Stadium’ is being built in Rotherham, which hopes to be ready in time for next season.

Anyway back to Swindon, after all the excitement of the cups we go back to the much more important issue of League Two.

The reverse fixture at the County Ground back in September which Swindon won 3-2 was a massive result for Town and we really haven’t looked back since.

The big incentive for Town this Saturday is the possibility that a win would put us only three points behind the top three.

Also with the clubs above us currently faltering slightly its important we keep up the pressure, because I don’t think Cheltenham or Southend will keep up there promotion push for much longer and we need to capitalize on that when it happens.

This match could prove to be one of our most difficult away trips to date. With PDC banned from the touchline and McCormack sitting out the first of a 2 match ban too, I would imagine Devera would partner Flint in the centre of defence.

For those traveling by rail or even road, the best station to go to is Meadowhall, (also adjacent to the M1) and then by the 'Supertram'. The price is £3.00 return and it stops only 100 yards from the ground.

I will be there, in what will be my 556th game in a row both home and away.
