The dreaded one

Today I became what I have always despised and dreaded becoming. With the Pmt monster knocking at my door and the end of a long summer holiday approaching, it was perhaps almost inevitable. Saying that though does not of course excuse my behaviour. But in my defence, there were plenty of others also displaying the same kind of behaviour.

I decided to take the children into town, to pick up a few last minute back to school bits. I knew that it was a bad idea before I even managed to leave the house, but I still did it!

Pmt, shopping and six children is so not a good combination. I ended up turning into one of those dreadful, irrational, (urggh! Cringing now,) Harpy- type Mothers, who screams at her children in the middle of the town centre, attracting attention from all those around her.

Now, most of the time, I am the onlooker, witnessing some other poor Mother who has reached the end of her tether. I tend to look on with a mixture of sympathy and smugness (the balance of this depends on the kind of mood I am in at the time.) Today however I became her Arrrggghh! “The Dreaded One.” I am not impressed with myself. Mind you, since we have returned home, they have all disappeared and they are all playing really nicely in another room to the one that I am in (Wonder why!)

I know that the 'back to school shop' can be frustrating at the best of time, I took our 3 school aged ones into town last week to get theirs. After doing supermarket for most uniform and the school shop in town for ties, we only had the stationary to do so I was felling pleased with myself as it had to that point been a smooth operation. I should not have been so confident, the kids decided that they were now hungry and started to argue about where I should buy them lunch, in frustration I turned on them and shouted 'SILENCE' not only did my 3 shut up but so did everybody else in the shop including the young girl at the check out. I took my 3's purchases to the till, we paid and left the shop still in silence but as we left there was a collective sigh from those still in the shop.
Needless to say we did not buy dinner anywhere and waited until we got home to be fed.
My daughters did not talk to me other than in monosyllables for two day.
Oh well every cloud has a silver lining.
