Yawn?!

I have been sat here since 7.30am sewing children’s socks! One of the challenges with having so many children so close in age and size is their socks and underwear. I have to label them in some way - otherwise they would end up wearing each others and to me that would be horrid. There are six of them living in a relatively small 3 bed house, so space and attention are big issues, as is identity, hence my sock sewing and other related activities.

Tiz is a lot happier about the play now. She has been given a few more words to say and yesterday she was especially chosen to go and meet Dame Kelly Holmes at Greendown School. She had a fab time and I think the message is now coming across that we have to share the good things.

Little man has been having a lot of black cloud days at school (sunshine = good behaviour, rainbow = warning, cloud = bloody awful.) Everyday I go to pick him up and I stand outside that classroom with fear in my heart! I peer through the window to see if I can see where his name is. It’s difficult as I never had this with any of the other children. They were all sunshine / occasionally rainbow, seldom/ever black cloud kids. Little man suffers sensory overload very easily and has a tendency to go wild. However, yesterday he did manage a rainbow day which was good. He has a fab teacher and we are working together to try to improve things. Considering though that just a year ago I was unsure if he would even manage a mainstream school, things could be a lot worse. He seems very popular with his class mates (especially the pretty little girls!)

I have seriously got to stop typing and get working! My house resembles a jumble sale. I have been given several bags of children’s clothes that I need to sort through. That’s one of the good things about living in Walcot. There are a lot of families who work hard, on low incomes and we tend to work together. Passing on clothes and helping out with the kids is just a few of the things which we do.

A tip for naming pants without sewing... I used to just put their initial on the label with a pen. Now I just get 'da youff' a set of boxers different to the other's (stripes/plain) and let them sort their own out once washed! The same goes for the socks - ones got smileys, the other has the days of the week and still manages to wear them on the wrong day!

MTW has the school spoken to you about getting him 'statemented' (basically it would entitle him to one on one support- which it sounds like he might need). It might be that they know the local authority wont agree to it but if it hasn't been discussed it is worth asking.
Also if he is consistently getting black cloud days it may be knocking his self esteem, whilst it can prevent challenges the teacher could POSSIBLY think about giving him an individual 'scheme' where his behaviour is rewarded/commented on by something meaningful to him and try to forgive him slightly worse behaviour than other pupils in the class bearing in mind he has a reason for some of his mischief making. This may already be in place- just thought I'd throw a few ideas out there! :-)
