Things I have learnt in 2008

The first one is a bit of a cliche, insanity is hereditary, and you get it from your kids!

After huge trauma comes great change

You need a huge crisis, in order to realise just who your true friends are (you know who you are and I’m blessed to have you all, thank you!)

This was the quote that started my year:

“So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable” – Christopher Reeve

Never a truer word was spoken. I was sent this quote via text message and have kept it stored on my mobile phone. When I have a wobbly moment, I read it. It has been of great comfort and help to me.

In 2008 I got a job! I met some fantastic people and also friends who I hold dear to my heart. I have learnt a lot, I’m still learning. 2008 was the year my marriage sadly failed. It was the year that my son was diagnosed with pdd (autistic spectrum disorder) and the year that my youngest son started school.

It was the year that I started to borrow books from other people, and to also read recommended books, because I realised that this would broaden my horizons, rather than to just read books that I had chosen for myself.

It was the year that I piled on a stone in weight (which I am anxious to remove) and developed a liking for good wine. I realised that my life is precious and I need to cherish it far more than I do. I puddle splashed, went on a dodgy roller coaster simulator (thanks Dan and Amy) and truly believed that I could do anything that I set my mind to (and if I failed, so bloody what! At least I tried!)

But really, 2008 was the year I spent full of great pride and admiration for my children and how much they have achieved.

To anybody who is reading this, I wish you a happy and prosperous new year.
