Hot! Hot! Hot!

I have been trying to get used to doing more cooking at home. It’s not something that I have done loads of over the past few years, so it’s taking some getting used to. Last week I made a chilli and it was horrible! It was watery and tasteless. Today, not wanting to be beaten, I decided on a second attempt.

First time around, I had made a huge saucepan and only added a small teaspoon of chilli powder. This I decided had to be my error. Perhaps in actual fact I was supposed to add a tablespoon? Well it was a huge pot again, so I decided to go with two tablespoons for good measure.

I called tea and some excited little monkeys came bounding enthusiastically to the dinner table. Alf proceeded to take a huge mouthful, went bright red and gasped, before choking and shouting “I need a drink!”

It was at this point that I decided to taste the chilli and I swear steam came out of my ears, it was that hot! I felt really bad. Poor Alfie still has red cheeks two hours later! The children had sandwiches for tea.

You wicked wicked Mum,
BTW, if you have room in the pan (or a spare pan and split the chilli) you can rescue a too hot chilli by added more base ingrediance to the dish, lots of things work well, baked beans, tinned new potatoes, tinned tomatoes even peas or carrots at a push.

So let me get this straight, you have 6 kids and cooking is "not something that I have done loads of over the past few years"

What the hell have you been feeding them then? Has Ronald McDonald been feeding them for you?

Thanks John C lol, maybe it will be third time lucky with the chilli.

Mr **** you seem to have some kind of personal gripe with me! Yes! I have six children, four I gave birth to and two who are my stepsons. BUT I would like to state that they are all my babies and I am proud and blessed to have them! I also work. Now, is there anything else you want to ask me? whilst we are settling a few scores. Btw, what gives you the right to judge? If you were aiming for me to bite, I did today.

Lasagne is surprisingly easy (and the packet usually comes with a recipe on). If you buy dried it is quite cheap and great for a big family. Cook it with chips or with a salad and you'll have a meal for 6 in no time at all! Another good 'big family' dish is potato bake. (Layer of potato, layer of white sauce & veg/.cheese then repeat...) Also shepherds pie. I'm getting hungry now. Rather hilariously the security word is, pass-some!

Hi MTW, lol, well you are braver than me the only chilli I make is with help from a jar! Thinking of your Alfie reminds me of the time when my son aged about four decided to tip the pepper pot up to taste some, the lid fell off and he had a mouth and nose full...he didnt stop sneezing for a long time!

A belated Happy New Year by the way!

Mr S punk you may be but do you now have the balls to apologise to MTW for your gross misjudgment of her? I could say so much more but will refrain from doing so, except that your negative comments are so inappropriate on a blog spot!

Why the hell did you cook a chilli and not taste it before serving it?

Surely any idiot knows to taste what they are cooking before serving it.

Ankh Morpork, I applaud your comment – spot on there.

Get the violin out! How long would it have taken to test it? I know what it's like to be a mum and that is no excuse.

“somebody blocking the toilet” was that from the meal you made the previous night? Haha :)

Simple chilli - 500 grams reasonable quality mince, 1 large chopped onion, 1tsp cumin powder, 1tsp coriander powder, 1 heaped tsp chilli powder (or more or less whatever) 1 tin chopped tomatos, 1 tin red kidney beans. Heat some oil in a heavy based pot, chop the onion, add, soften. Add the mince, brown it, add the spices, stir and cook for a couple of minutes, add salt to taste, pour in the tomatos stir, then add the kidney beans. I prefer to cook it slowly for a couple of hours on a low heat in the oven, or better still make it the day before you want it. Oh and if you want add a couple of fresh chillis too. Dont forget the sour cream when you eat it!If you want to be especially clever add a table spoon of cocoa powder and a couple of cloves of garlic. This makes it really rich and dark. Yum.
