Some good news

Yesterday I had to take Alfie to the hospital for his ENT appointment. Alfie has had glue ear from birth. This causes hearing loss and recurrent ear infections, as well as his ear drums perforating regularly, which as you can imagine causes him a great deal of pain.

When he had his hearing tested in December, it was discovered that it had gone right down and he would need to be fitted with hearing aids. Tuesday was the day that his hearing aids would be ready and he had to go up for more detailed ear tests, in order to determine his hearing levels more accurately.

During the tests he was a little star and sat patiently putting men in the boat every time he heard a noise. As the test progressed, I felt that he was doing much better than in previous tests and when we received the results I was proved right.

The previous week he had suffered ear infections in both ears and both ear drums had perforated on the same day. It’s so awful seeing your child go through such pain, I am sure any parent will tell you that all they want to do is go through pain for their child. If only this were possible. But anyway, out of all this pain and discomfort came something good. A lot of the glue that had built up in his ears had been able to drain and his hearing levels had improved dramatically. His hearing levels were actually just under normal levels!

It was decided that Alfie did not need the hearing aids and instead would be monitored regularly for any change in his hearing levels. Of course the levels may go down and the glue may again build up, but at the moment things are looking good!

My eldest son (now 9) had similar problems from birth until he was 6-7 but after several operations he now has near normal hearing. Best of luck to Alfie lets hope the corner has been turned.
