Once upon a time there lived a wee family who were looking for something fun to do on a sunny (yes sunny!) Bank Holiday. DIY was out of the question, due to the lethal combination of many tiny fingers and inquisitive minds. However salvation came in the form of an advertised “Family Fun Day & BBQ”.
The Fun Day sounded just the ticket for a nice sunny (yes I said it again SUNNY!) Bank Holiday Monday.
Upon arrival came the discovery of an extra added bonus, everything was free! Not a ticket to be bought in sight. There was a trampoline and a bouncy castle to wear out the young monkeys and a bench where the grown ups could sit to enjoy the sun and to marvel at where the younger monkey’s energy came from.
There were warning signs right from the beginning, but to be honest they caused a little curiosity rather than a great deal of concern. However, those warning signs got louder and louder, until they became giant alarm bells clattering loudly in the grown ups ears.
The “ Fun Day” seemed to exclude any other members of the public and in actual fact turned out to be somebody’s birthday party of whom we were the uninvited guests or put even more crudely “The Gatecrashers”.
After the children were refused any more than a single item from the BBQ and the birthday presents were put on display, the grown ups realised that they had made a serious error and began checking their invites in disbelief. However the invites stated clearly “Family Fun Day”
What to do? Well the atmosphere grew increasingly uncomfortable to say the least and it was obvious we were not altogether welcome (actually the word leper springs to mind). So we quickly finished our drinks and left promptly.
The lesson we have learnt is that any invitation you may receive from someone on Facebook is to be treated with extreme caution! So the “Fun Day” has carried on at home, where the children have decided to sell pears from the garden to the general public, of which there seemed to be a distinct lack of (they are probably at a “Fun Day” somewhere…) Roll Up! Roll Up!
