THE dignity and courage of Tanya Savage is remarkable.

It was nearly a year ago that she received the devastating news that her son Jack was killed in a road accident.

That tragedy on the A419 was shocking and very public. The circumstances surrounding it, and a later court hearing, were controversial and heartbreaking.

Tanya had the love and support of a strong family, and they shared the grief as best they could.

But as she coped with her grief, she realised she wanted to try to create something positive from the tragedy, and so on the anniversary of Jack’s death Tanya will embark on the Inca Trail in Peru to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation children’s charity.

The 26-mile journey will take her nine days and Tanya is hoping to have raised £8,000 for the charity, a not inconsiderable sum.

“I decided to do something positive, rewarding and challenging from something so tragic,” she said.

This caring, determined woman knows nothing can bring her precious son back to her. But she can take some solace in the fact that her love and compassion will do some good.

No one could blame her if on the anniversary of Jack’s death she shut herself in a darkened room and turned her back on the world outside.

But no – Tanya will be on the other side of the world, putting herself through tremendous physical exertion to ease the suffering of young people around the country.

We wish her the very best of luck.
