SO where will you be watching England’s first 2014 World Cup match against Italy on June 14?

Perhaps you’ll be at home with friends and family, enjoying the game with cans of beer or bottles of wine.

Or you may join the crowds of fans who will pack out the many pubs in an around Swindon that will be showing this match plus many others throughout the tournament.

And police locally have issued a stark warning ahead of the World Cup, and in preparation for this summer – do not drink and drive.

It’s something we hear every year, and for good reason. Too many road tragedies are the result of drink driving and the police’s latest campaign is timely and should be heeded.

Most of us will be able to enjoy the matches at the World Cup and have a few drinks to help possibly celebrate, or drown our sorrows.

But caution should be exercised.

As the tournament is taking place in Brazil, there are many kick-off times that will be late at night and pubs will be bursting at the seams with fans who have had more than a couple of pints.

Police officers will by lying in wait after the matches – and the morning after, when the effects of alcohol can still linger.

Insp Steve Cox, head of roads policing, spells it out very clearly: “The message from Wiltshire Police is very clear: If you take a chance on drink driving, you will be caught.”

We have no reason to doubt that. You have been warned.
