SOMETIMES a single magnificent gesture is all that’s needed to bring comfort to those who need it and inspire the rest of us.

Such is the case with the anonymous £10,000 donation to the fund set up for the partner and unborn child of Mikkie Mahon.

When Mr Mahon was killed in a motorcycle accident, the community was robbed of a good and kind human being.

The most grievous loss was surely suffered by his partner, Charlotte, who is seven months pregnant.

Friends and family, themselves grieving, immediately set about providing a measure of security for mother and child.

Within a short time a four-figure sum had been raised, but the huge single donation has brought the total to nearly £14,000.

We very much hope the sum continues to climb, and that, whatever happens, Charlotte and her little girl do not experience a moment of hardship.

Everybody who has donated so far, however much money they were able to give, can rest assured that they have done a very fine thing indeed, and have made a real difference in a place and time where it is needed.

Mr Mahon’s child will never know him personally, but there will always be people ready to tell her about him.

Among the things she will learn is that he was a man who inspired astonishing love and loyalty.
