I know there are a number of people complaining about the work being done by Thames Water on upgrading Swindon’s sewer system, and I happen to be one of the motorists inconvenienced on a daily basis by the congestion caused around the Bruce Street Bridges where work is ongoing.

However, your article (Adver, April 9) has opened my eyes to the reason for the work, and a very good reason it is too.

The roadworks are well worth all the hassle in the short term if the perennial problem of flooded sewers will indeed be resolved.

I have friends and family who have in the recent past suffered the awful indignity and potential health risks caused by flooded sewers contaminating their homes and gardens.

For the sake of those who have had to endure this dreadful problem whenever heavy storms come, I for one will happily endure having to sit in my car locked in traffic for a little longer.

I hope others will put themselves in the position of those to whom this long overdue work will be of immense benefit and utter relief, and bear with the situation for as long as it needs to take.
