As a regular reader of the Swindon Advertiser newspaper, I am amazed at the letters of Peter Smith. The power of his arguments, his knowledge in politics and his fairness to others is invaluable.

In his latest letter (SA October 20) he responded eloquently to HG Smith, who suggested last week that the West should ‘nuke’ the Middle East.

Mr Smith said it well. However, I’d only add a few lines about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. HG Smith brought up Hiroshima and Nagasaki and went on to say that the Japanese surrendered because of the inhuman nuclear bombing on these places. In the letter HG Smith asserted his lack of intelligence and ignorance in politics, history and his lack of humanity. The Japanese empire had already collapsed before the nuclear bombs. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were cruel and merciless. The bombings claimed the lives of innocent women, children and men who had done nothing apart from being Japanese. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed about 250,000 people and became the most dreadful slaughter of civilians in modern history.

To suggest dropping nuclear bombs on the Middle East is insane because it’s deadly weaponry and it does not win any war, only massacres more innocent people.
