In the run up to the election in 2010, David Cameron spoke of what he called a ‘broken society’. In 2012 the Adver printed a letter of mine ‘A destroyed society’, in which I wrote that Cameron’s ideological policies would wreak havoc and misery across the country.

Four years on from Cameron becoming PM and two years from when my letter appeared, what has happened?

A huge rise in food banks, soup kitchens, homelessness, zero-hour contracts, part-time working, pay freezes in the public sector, which has led to strikes, and for the first time in 130 years, midwives went on strike on 13 October. Care homes and libraries closing... the list is endless.

In contrast, we have seen tax cuts for the richest in society, with chief executives’ pay rise in some companies to more than 120 times more than a worker in the same company.

The last twelve months has seen the UK’s richest one thousand wealth increase to £518 billion. This government’s policies have created anger, resentment and divisions in society.

Broken society? No. A destroyed society? Definitely. Never mind, we are all in it together, aren’t we?
