Best of a bad job

RE the inaugural meeting of Nythe, Eldene & Liden Parish Council. Although opposed to the new parishes’ setup, the Labour Party is already working to make the best of a bad job.

At the first meeting of the new Parish Council the three Labour Party members initiated a number of important issues on behalf of the people of Nythe, Eldene & Liden.

These included the problems created by the parish boundaries, such as the cleaning of underpasses that divide adjoining parishes, and the need to ensure that now that future meetings should rotate around all three communities so all residents have the opportunity to attend.

Adam Hunt and Bazil Solomon will be using their computer expertise for the Parish Council and my appointment to the Transport Committee will enable my bus survey to be shared with the new bus undertaking.

Look into your hearts

THE London Bridge incident only fortifies my earlier question of punishment under treason for those who plot against this country.

I know what it means to me to be British and don’t want anything to destroy it.

I call on the people to look into their hearts and know who they are and stop the destruction of our country.

Praise for volunteers

EVERY day thousands of young people across Wiltshire are helped to improve their lives by the 440 inspiring people who give up their time and volunteer for The Children’s Society.

To celebrate National Volunteers’ Week (June 1-7) I want to say thank you to all our volunteers and supporters for their incredible contribution and the huge variety of ways they give their time and voices to support our work with young people affected by issues such as abuse, hardship and neglect.

There are 152,564 children living in Wiltshire and 7,754 are classed as children ‘in need’. The Children’s Society’s volunteers, campaigners and supporters make an enormous difference to so many lives by supporting young people directly in our projects helping in our charity shops, raising funds and awareness of our work.

This month we’re celebrating being re-awarded the Investing in Volunteers quality standard which means we are one of the top organisations to volunteer for and provide wonderful training, support and recognition for good work.

If you would like to talk to us about how you could get involved, you can find out more at childrenssociety.org.uk/volunteer or call 0300 303 7000.

It’s movie madness

DOES anybody else despair at the rubbish being shown at our cinemas these days?

It just seems to be endless sequels, and remakes, and spin-offs. I know this is now the blockbuster season, but surely there is something out there that will offer an alternative to superhero movies and expensive, special effects filled sequels. Really, do we need another Pirates Of The Caribbean film?

I noticed your reviewer gave a scathing 1/10 review to the Baywatch movie last week, and I’m not surprised (not that I’ve seen it, nor plan to after reading that review) - it looks like an awful big screen spin-off of a not particularly good TV series. And name one TV programme that’s been turned into a decent film adaptation.

I know these blockbusters make money, and that seems to be the prime concern of the studios responsible for churning out this rubbish.

We are blessed with three excellent multi-screen cinemas in Swindon and it would be nice to have a bit of variety with what is being shown there each week. I’ve yet to sample the IMAX screen at the Empire in Greenbridge because it’s had nothing on that I fancy seeing. If the reviews are good, the upcoming Dunkirk may change that.

As for this coming weekend, The Mummy remake of a remake of a remake is not on my to do list.

Thank heavens for My Cousin Rachel. OK, it’s not that original - it’s based on a book by Daphne Du Maurier and was filmed in the 1950s, but at least it’s something a bit different.
