IT seems to me that civilisation can be just a veneer, remove restraints and a human being can return to a pagan way of life. Even with restraints, some people can be violent, cruel, and even wicked.

We as a civilisation have brought in many laws, abolishing many cruel and primitive practises.

I am afraid that without laws protecting wild living creatures, many people from the very top of our society still behave in a cruel and unthinking way. It does not matter if they are well educated Christians, they seem to enjoy killing for sport.
