DES Morgan is quite right to suggest we live in an ID fraught fairyland.

The Governments' u-turn on ID Cards is just one more chapter in the billion pound fairytale. No one, with the exception of few junior MPs, is confused over the fact that it is the Identity Register rather than the ID Card that's the main issue, so Alan Johnson's big news is rather a damp squib. It is more a case of the officials in the Identity and Passport service shoring up their grand scheme, an attempt to bind the hands of a future government against cancellation of what is the most bizarre and intrusive databank of our personal details.
