Letter from Roger Foord

HAVING been a long term Town supporter - I now live in Hertfordshire - I have been researching information from the Advertiser for my cousin, also ex Swindonian, Terry Lloyd for his birthday from 1939.

With the Town’s reported problems today I thought your readers might be interested in this Advertiser item from November 1939.

“Wednesday, November 22 - Swindon Town FC reported that in addition to meeting all its expenses, the club had made weekly profits of up to £50 and had banked more than £400 since the suspension of the normal league programme in early September.”

“We realise of course that wartime football cannot have quite the same appeal as that played in normal times”, Sam Allen, the club’s secretary told the Advertiser.

“But support to date has proved that our efforts to keep the flag flying in difficult times are being appreciated”.

Let’s hope the Town survive and get to the playoffs and win. As your readers will know we have never lost at Wembley.
