IN reply to Mr Warner, can I remind him that in Aug 95, as the then opposition chancellor, he told the house of commons that when his party was in power, the money spent on quangos (then in the region of £27 billion) would be spent on better things and the quangos closed. The current number of quangos is around the thousand mark and the annual bill is around the 165 billion mark which is about five times the defence budget which we were told this week he did cut!
