Letter from J H Oliver

3:59pm Tuesday 9th March 2010

WITH reference to Des Morgan’s letter (SA, March 1) on bullying.

One might not agree to the publicity by Bullying Helpline, but although a person does not show physical scars the mental one stays with them.

Leaving school in 1951 I had intended to become a motor electrical apprentice, but the electrician who was to teach me had his so-say moments, his anger, shouting and swearing. It was put down to ‘Bill letting off steam again’! But to the one on the receiving end it was a different matter, how could I put up with five years of this behaviour?

Fortunately, I was in the position of finding other employment. A different matter in this day and age. One does not realise how common it is for a person in authority to show their frustration to one individual under them, examples of which I witnessed while working in different offices, sometimes being vindictive as well.

For someone who boasts of his father’s ministry and upbringing, our Prime Minister should set himself as an example. How would his dad view his son, as a bad tempered person who puts his staff down by shouting and swearing at them? Would he be proud of his offspring?
