Letter from Les Craft

REGARDING the front page on March 9 (about bike theft) I am not surprised. It is well known that cycle theft is rife in this town. The public is being asked to use cars less and cycle more, but if you take a good bike into town it is very likely to be stolen.

Fifty seven years ago when I lived in east London, friends and I used to cycle to Southend on Sea for a day out. Near the Kursaal a man had set up a cycle park. It was a large shed on the side of his house with lockable bike racks. You could pay to park your bike for the day. You were given a token and you had to produce this to collect your bike.

Swindon Council provide car parks, why not secure cycle parks? Lark stores and employers in the town could also help with this. In fact I know one employer that does. My son cycles in from Highworth and is allowed to put his bike in a secure parking place.

So come on Swindon Council, you want to be green, give cyclists a chance.
