WHILE visiting a friend recently I was able to witness students leaving a nearby school as they passed on their way.
Approximately half the passing students were Asian. They went by quietly and with reasonable decorum. In contrast the English students were shouting, unruly, throwing stones, using bad language, and some smoking.
The difference in behaviour, I believe, is the traditional discipline and obedience in Asian families which instil in their children a passion for self improvement and strong family ties.
The unruly disrespectful standards of some children today can be traced back to the liberal ‘do-gooders’ who 40 to 50 years ago advocated the end of teachers’ punishment book and cane, and teacher and student should be on first name terms. Now stressed teachers struggle to impose their authority in the class rooms.
At one time parents were able to give a slap on the backside to correct childish tantrums. Not anymore. All this had led to the unruly disrespectful attitude of some children today that we have to live with.
