ROBERT FEAL-Martinez and I have at least one thing in common: everything we have written on the subject of climate change is true.

I’m sure UKIP’s Head of Media is sincere in his belief that climate change, if it is occurring, is not caused to any significant degree by human activity. I am equally sincere in my belief that, as Greg Heathcliffe wrote, “the jury is still out”.

Choosing which “experts” to believe and which to disregard may be politically expedient, but it is not scientific. Professor Carl Wunsch, Professor of Physical Oceanography at MIT, warns that “Climate change is arguably one of the most complicated of all scientific problems”. He thinks that it “almost surely has a major human-induced component”, but no conclusions are possible at this stage.

If the scientific community should in future prove that man’s activities have no significant effect on the climate, I would be delighted. In the meantime, the most rational approach must be to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel and keep CO2 emissions to a minimum. This can be achieved by improving mechanical efficiency, reducing waste and developing clean renewable energy.
