It seems that my delight at the announcement was somewhat premature. It appears that the Government will still continue to develop the information data bases which underpin the basis for identity cards, which I believe is a sure sign that the 'promise' made by the Home Secretary that ID cards will 'never' be compulsory for UK citizens will have as much value as any 'promise' made by Tony Blair or Gordon Brown. It is in fact quite worthless. Then someone put the music (noise) on, so that stopped the conversation for me, though I’d go out and do a Harvey Wallbanger, or drink up and go home, chose the latter it being less painful.
