Mum Dolly Goodman used her baking skills to say thank you for the support she's received in two decades of fighting cancer.

And she said the Macmillan coffee morning she staged was an emotional day.

Dolly, 46, from Upper Stratton, started her bakery business Goodys with her partner, Ian, in December last year and they used it at the weekend to raise almost £570 for Macmillan.

She described it as her chance to give something back for all the support she’d received over the years battling the disease on an off since the age of 19.

“I wanted to do this because I owe something for everything that’s been done for me, especially the NHS. If is wasn't for them I wouldn’t be here, my kids wouldn’t have had a mum, I wouldn’t have seen my grandchildren. Thank god for the NHS.”

“I’ve got to give something back, I owe so many people so much, my mum had to give up job to take me to treatment, My mum’s best friend Aunty Sue gave up her job to look after my children”.

Dolly, who has had ‘survivor’ tattooed on her arm to commemorate her survival against three bouts of thyroid cancer and a growth in her womb, said she loves baking, despite the toll cancer has taken on her body.

“I’m never going to be in remission, I’m fully okay with that, I have medication I take that keeps the cancer at bay, I’m constantly aware it and keeps me checking.

“I don’t know why I’m still here, I must have a purpose. I love baking but it’s definitely challenging.

"Just got to keep pushing on, no matter how much it hurts, how much it aches, just keep going.”

A number of local companies provided raffle prizes towards the event, including Little Bag of Herbs, Fern and Ivy, Parker’s Books, Naturally Beautiful, Hells Bells Crafts, Make It Yours By Jo, Fudge Bomb, Nellies, Butterfly Balloons, Charles Harding, Britz Fish and Chips, Marios, Squires Cakes and Farlis Fancies.

“I really want to thank local companies, to the small local businesses that have come forward to give local gifts to the raffle," Dolly said.

“They’ve all come forward to give the most beautiful prizes. A massive heartfelt huge thank you.”

“The day was fab, we were getting prepared and people were queuing from 10.45am. I wasn’t ready.”

“The first lady in the queue was someone I met on Facebook, she’s getting married soon but is also going through chemotherapy.”

“Another baker that came had breast cancer. There was a lot of sharing cancer stories and it was actually quite emotional.”

“I’m over the moon.”
