Alzheimer’s Support’s is recruiting friendly and enthusiastic volunteers for its award-winning day clubs.

The charity has a number of rewarding opportunities, including volunteers at the Old Silk Works club in Warminster and volunteer cooks at Mill Street in Trowbridge.

It is holding a special open day for prospective volunteers at the Warminster club in Beech Avenue on February 28, 10am-2pm. It’s a chance to have a look around, get a feel for the relaxed and informal atmosphere of the club and chat to existing volunteers and staff.

Alzheimer’s Support volunteer manager Annie Clayton said: “Volunteering is a great way to make new friends, give something back to the community, and of course, enjoy the satisfaction of making a personal connection with the people we support.

“Our volunteers are all ages, from teenagers to retired people and very much part of the family. We really treasure the contribution they make. All we ask is that you are a people person – we provide all the training you need.”

In Trowbridge, the charity is looking for people who enjoy cooking to join its rota of occasional volunteer cooks to prepare a tasty and nutritious lunch for up to 20 people in the well-equipped kitchen.

Day club volunteers chat with members, join in or lead small group activities and help serve refreshments and ideally would be available for a full day on the same day of the week. Any additional talents or skills are welcomed.

Both roles are enormously rewarding role and volunteers are supported by experienced staff.

Janet, who volunteers at Mill Street club says: “You don’t need to be a special kind of person to volunteer, you just need to be you and that’s enough. I just have fun while enjoying the company of the members.

“There are some more basic tasks like helping to serve meals and lots of teas and coffees, but nothing I wouldn’t do at home for my family and friends.

“We play games of all sorts and we do puzzles and various quizzes. We talk lots too, there is such a variety of people who come to the club and they have led such interesting lives. Making a positive difference in someone’s day is extremely satisfying.”
