PROVING that being true to yourself never goes out of style, the all-star cast of Legally Blonde The Musical wowed crowds at its opening night at the Bristol Hippodrome on Monday.

Adapted from the 2001 Reese Witherspoon movie, the all-singing, all-dancing production features the show-stopping vocal talents of X Factor’s Lucie Jones, former Eastenders actress Rita Simons and soap actor Bill Ward.

For those unfamiliar with the fabulously brilliant film, Elle Woods isn’t your standard Malibu girl.

Despite having a passion for all things pink, as well as an undying love for her pampered chihuahua Bruiser, the smash-hit Broadway and West End musical sees sorority queen bee Elle ditch her UCLA education for the bright lights of Harvard Law School in hope of winning back her childhood sweetheart Warner.

But in her quest for love, Elle discovers she is capable of winning back so much more – including the respect of her fellow classmates as she proves herself as a highly-talented law student.

There were so many standout moments throughout the opening night performance but for me, it was Lucie Jones who stole the show.

Having represented the UK at Eurovision, I knew she was a talented singer but combined with her sassy and classy take on Elle’s character, she lit up the stage like she was theatre royalty.

Rita Simons plays Elle’s right hand woman in the show as salon owner Paulette.

In the film, her character was rather shy and timid with the odd outburst of funny wit but in her performance on Monday night, Simons took the character to another level.

Scene after scene she made sure the crowd was in hysterics (and yes, by that I do mean in the hilarious bend and snap performance).

Hats off must be paid to David Barret who played Elle’s new love interest Emmett for his enchanting vocal abilities as well as Bill Ward who captured the cruel and unforgiving character of Professor Callahan brilliantly.

From the impromptu appearance from one of the adorable dogs to the impressive skipping rope scene, the show has so many different elements that leave you in awe of what the cast can do.

The subtle tones of hilarity mixed with emotional music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, the show is sure to leave with you goosebumps.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Legally Blonde The Musical is one of those performances that makes you want to go back and watch it again. It encompasses what a real crowd pleasing show is all about which is why the wonderful cast received a standing ovation - and quite rightly too.
