RANK-AND-FILE officers in Wiltshire are going to be offered the chance to vote in a ballot on whether police should be allowed go on strike.

In a landmark decision the Police Federation of England and Wales announced this week it will ballot its members on whether industrial rights should be sought, including the right to strike The decision to hold a ballot was made at an extraordinary meeting of the Joint Central Committee last month, and last week it was announced it will take place from January 31 until February 28, next year.

The PFEW said: “The ballot to seek industrial rights is the most significant decision the members will make in the history of the Police Federation of England and Wales and of the police service itself.”

Inspector Kate Pain, the chairman of Wiltshire Police Federation, said: “We will be giving our member all the information we can so they can make an informed decision.”
