When I think of Peter Cox it is for the pop classics of chart band Go West, so I did not expect him to rock me back on my heels with a country-style album.
Peter’s voice, smooth as silk but with a gritty underbelly, links the tracks in a leisurely stroll down a country lane.
Missing You opens the 12-track CD, with lyrics that instantly paint a picture. Then Peter’s strong, rich voice rolls into I Don’t Wanna Know, before jumping to the blues track, Both Hands On The Wheel.
Feel The Heat takes the listener on the move to the Big Apple, with its bright lights and jazzy sax, while the clue is in the title with Love Lives On, a wistful love song performed with a Gospel choir.
Down To The River goes back to the country rock beat with a magical guitar solo. Can’t Stand To Say Goodbye is more country pop but Dashboard Lights is pure Nashville.
Not In My Name has instant appeal, with a bouncy beat that belies the strong, political statement of the lyrics.
Broken Back Road is a softer country track with steel guitar centre stage. And to round off this beautifully presented album Peter gives us that Dixie feel, with the smooth jazz coating of a smoky blues bar in Long Way To New Orleans. - Flicky Harrison
