A JUDGE asked for a case to be brought before him after learning magistrates had put the defendant on a 24-hour tagged curfew.

Jason Young, who is accused of being involved in the drugs trade, had contacted the court mentioning the ‘onerous’ bail conditions imposed by justices.

And Judge Douglas Field, sitting at Swindon Crown Court, asked for the case to be listed before him.

He was told the 34-year-old had been bailed to live at his parents’ address in Farnham, Surrey, and observe a 24-hour curfew monitored by an electronic tag.

Alex Daymond, defending, said: “When he was bailed by the magistrates they imposed a number of very onerous conditions.

“It seems somewhat excessive even though the offence is a serious one.”

He asked for the restriction to be altered to allow him out of the house during the day and also so he could go into the garden to smoke, as his mother has a lung condition.

Releasing him on new bail conditions, Judge Douglas Field said: “This has arisen because he sent an email to someone in the court office.”

He imposed a night-time curfew from 9pm to 6am and adjourned the case to Friday, June 14.

Young is charged with possessing crack cocaine with intent to supply. He was said to have had about £10,000 worth of the drug on Friday, April 19.

No charge was formally put to the defendant, formerly of Pinnocks Place, Upper Stratton, and he has yet to enter a plea.
