POLICE were called to Toothill at the weekend following reports that a car had crashed into a school pond.

Officers received a call to Hazelwood Academy, formerly Toothill Primary School, at 5am on Saturday morning.

The car, a Chrysler Grand Voyager, had crashed through a fence and into the pond and the driver had fled the scene by the time officers arrived.

Suzanne Lloyd, the headteacher of Hazelwood Academy, said: “Fortunately, because it happened at the weekend it has had a limited impact on the children’s learning.

“A temporary measure has been put in to secure the pond and we are working to fix it fully as soon as possible.

“The damage is superficial.”

Following enquiries, police officers arrested and charged a 42-year-old man with failing to report a road traffic accident, failing to provide a specimen, using a motor vehicle without a test certificate and without third party insurance.

He will appear at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on August 7.
