TUMBLEDOWN Seven Fields School will be rebuilt, after all.

As reported in the Adver last week, staff and parents at the school were planning to take their fight for decent buildings for the Penhill school to Downing Street.

The children had to be moved from the main school building in 2004, but now even the replacement mobile classrooms have started leaking.

Swindon Council, which originally said the school would be replaced earlier this year only for doubt to be cast on the plans, has said that £6.5m has been moved around its budget so the school can be rebuilt.

The money will come from the council's four-year capital programme.

The current school will be demolished and a new school built on the same site. Work is expected to start during 2008/9 and during this time pupils may be relocated next door to the former Uplands School building.

The council will be meeting with Seven Fields to discuss this arrangement.

Coun Garry Perkins, cabinet member for children services, said: "There has been difficulty in reallocating this funding as there are many essential education requirements in Swindon, but we do understand the urgency of replacing Seven Fields Primary School and we have a responsibility to ensure that pupils have the best possible facilities.

"The funding is a positive step forward and shows our commitment in providing a good education in a quality environment. The new school will be a fresh start for pupils and teachers and it will have a positive impact on the community. We look forward to working closely with the school in order to build this fantastic learning environment."

The reallocation of funds will be formally considered by the cabinet on Wednesday next week as part of the agenda item for the budget proposals 2007/8. The meeting starts at 6.30pm, and members of the public can have their say at 6pm.
