GYM-goers have another option in West Swindon after the relaunch of a community fitness centre last Saturday.

The Scrappers Gym, run by the charity Swindon Children’s Scrapstore, has reopened on the ground floor of Sensor House in Langley Road in an effort to accommodate more users.

Boxing royalty was on hand to help with Saturday’s event, as Ricky Porter, Scrappers Gym patron and former World Boxing Council top 10 boxer, made an appearance.

Scrappers has moved out of the space it shared with 24hr Gym in the Hillmead Industrial Estate and now occupies a separate unit to the rear of the main gym building.

The room they were initially using free of charge inside the main gym proved too small and a larger space was needed to accommodate an ever-increasing client base.

Scrappers Gym and Community Fitness Centre will be open Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 7pm and 8.30pm at a charge of £3 per session.

Olivia McCann, project manager at Swindon Children’s Scrapstore, said: “This is a fantastic project and provides opportunities for local people who cannot afford to go to commercial gyms, to get fit and learn from professionally qualified trainers.

“We are always looking for new volunteers to get involved with Scrappers Gym. If you have experience in boxing, kickboxing, martial arts or fitness, and you would like to help contact the Scrappers team on 01793 513982.”
